We worked with the founders of Double Six to bring their vision of the ultimate board game café to life; a social space that combines fun, accessibility, and great food, appealing to both casual visitors and dedicated board game enthusiasts.
The Brief
Created by three directors from different professional backgrounds but united by their love of board games, Double Six was designed to be a welcoming café for all ages and demographics. By day, the space needed to feel bright and inclusive, while by night it would transform into a more atmospheric hub. With a partnership in place with a high-end restaurant, the food offering was also central to the concept, requiring a design that elevated the overall experience.
The Challenge
The project involved converting a former hairdresser’s into a multi-zoned venue, incorporating a kitchen, bar, and varied seating areas within a limited and awkward footprint. With budget constraints and structural limitations, the design required creative thinking to maximise functionality while still delivering a playful and memorable identity. Another key aim was to establish a concept that could be replicated in future venues as the brand expands.
Our Solution
We designed a flexible space that works effortlessly from day to night using natural light to create an open, family-friendly feel during the day, and layered lighting to transform the atmosphere in the evening. Playful board game references were woven into the design, from dice patterns in the bar to Cluedo-inspired upholstery. Bespoke joinery was created to house the extensive game collection, alongside a mix of seating zones to cater for different group sizes. With quirky details, carefully considered zoning, and a balance between fun and sophistication, Double Six is a café designed for growth as well as enjoyment.
