The brief

The ambition for Club 1875 was to modernise the food and beverage offering while creating a versatile environment that honours the club’s historic identity. The space needed to function seamlessly for diverse member activities throughout the day, from post-match drinks and casual dining to morning coffee catchups and club events.

Key requirements included:

• Delivering a brighter, fresher setting that reflects the energy of the club.

• Establishing clear zoning across the bar, bistro and family lounge to improve member movement.

• Integrating historical touches and traditional detailing alongside contemporary finishes.

• Creating comfortable, durable seating options tailored for both fast turnarounds and relaxed dwell times.

The challenge

Refurbishing a core hospitality asset within an active club environment requires balancing non-negotiable architectural boundaries with fresh design thinking. The existing clubhouse contained fixed timber features and floor finishes that needed to be retained. Rather than allowing these elements to feel restrictive, 2G used them as an anchor, carefully building a palette of colours, textures and finishes that complimented the original fabric while giving the space an entirely new identity. The design also had to reflect extensive feedback from member consultation sessions, ensuring the result felt genuinely welcoming and familiar rather than overly commercial.

By pairing practical operational planning with sensitive design details, 2G delivered a high-performing hospitality space that respects history while serving the modern needs of its membership.
