When one of the UK’s most influential workspace developers sets out to design a space that brings life to work, the expectations are clear: it needs to set a benchmark for the entire region. Taking the ground, 9th, and 10th floors of EW1 (Enterprise Wharf), Birmingham’s flagship smart building, 2G Design & Build delivered a concept that redefines what a commercial HQ can be. By fusing high-end hospitality design with workplace functionality, the scheme creates an environment where people actively want to spend their working day.
The brief
Bruntwood SciTech needed a Midlands workspace that provided an extraordinary working environment for their customers. The brief called for a space that felt markedly superior to standard office offerings. The scope spanned three distinct levels, incorporating a hotel-grade reception, event spaces, executive meeting rooms, quiet focus zones, and dedicated wellness facilities, including a yoga studio.
The challenge
Designing a flagship workspace within a smart-enabled building requires balancing high technical performance with human warmth. The key challenge was avoiding the sterile atmosphere often associated with tech-forward developments. Furthermore, integrating specialised wellness amenities like yoga spaces into an office demanded rigorous spatial planning, acoustic control, and moisture management. Because 2G was appointed for the design phase, every layout, material specification, and detail had to be mapped with absolute precision to ensure seamless handover to pre-construction teams.
The solution
Leaning into our deep hospitality DNA, we treated the arrival experience less like a corporate lobby and more like a boutique hotel. The ground floor opens into a dynamic reception and event space that immediately sets an inviting, premium tone. Moving upstairs to the workplace floors, open plan desks sit alongside custom focus booths and collaborative breakout areas, allowing teams to choose the environment that suits their task.
The standout feature of the scheme is the upper-level wellness floor. Here, we designed a dedicated yoga studio suite wrapped in warm timber tones, soft ambient lighting, and natural tactile textures. By placing well-being at the heart of the floorplan, the design directly addresses post-pandemic workspace expectations, turning the office into a true health and community destination.
Looking ahead
Currently in pre-construction, the design scheme for EW1 and adjoining project, EW2 establishes a bold new direction for Bruntwood SciTech’s Midlands presence. Supported by 3D architectural animations, the project demonstrates how commercial developers can lead by example, creating human-centred spaces that drive culture, well-being, and long-term value.
